Mekkel George Lind, born May 16, 1915 at Nordegg, Alberta, completed his education in 1934. Single, Lind lived at Innisfail, Alberta where he worked as a well driller before enlisting at Calgary, Alberta June 10, 1941. Lind served with the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve attached to the H. M. C. S. Athabaskan (We Fight As One) as a Petty Officer (Stoker) during the Second World War. A Tribal-class destroyer, the H.M.C.S. Athabaskan patrolled the Iceland-Faroes Passage in 1943 and took part in Operation Gearbox III at Spitsbergen in northern Norway. While patrolling off the coast of France with sister Tribal-class destroyer ‘Haida’, the H.M.C.S. Athabaskan came under attack by German torpedo boat T24 on April 29, 1944. One of 128 men missing following the attack on April 29, 1944, Petty Officer (Stoker) Mekkel George Lind is commemorated on the Halifax Memorial, Nova Scotia. Son of Jorgen ‘George’ and Helga Amelia (nee Anderson) Lind of Innisfail, Alberta; brother of Jager, Norman, Walberg ‘Wally’ Charles, Sjeldrup Victor, Esther Catherine, Audrey Almira, Freda Lorraine Barbara, and Andrew Lind (died in 1930); he was 28 years old. Athabaskan Island near Bella Bella, British Columbia is named in honour of the H.M.C.S. Athabaskan.
