Charles Webster was born March 4, 1896 at Aberdeen, Scotland and came to Canada about 1911. Single and living at Elgin, Manitoba, Webster worked as a farmer by trade before enlisting at Brandon, Manitoba December 1, 1915. Overseas with the 79th Battalion in April 1916, Webster went on to serve as a Private with the Canadian Expeditionary Force attached to the 16th Battalion (Canadian Scottish) during the First World War. Landing in France in late July 1916 with the 3rd Brigade, 1st Canadian Division, the 16th Battalion fought in the Ypres salient, and at Hill 60 in France. Wounded while fighting near Mouquet Farm, Private Charles Webster was evacuated to No. 22 General Hospital at Camiers, France where he died of gunshot wounds. He is commemorated at Etaples Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France and on the Elgin War Memorial, Manitoba. Son of the late Alexander Webster and Barbara (nee Smith) Thorpe (formerly Webster) of Elgin, Manitoba; stepson of John William Thorpe of Elgin; brother of Helen, Millicent, George, Beatrice and Gunner Alexander Webster (veteran of the First World War); stepbrother of Robert, Arthur, Charlotte, Sherlock and Herbert Thorpe; he was 20 years old.
