Thomas Donald Wilkinson, born December 9, 1917 at Brandon, Manitoba, grew up on the family farm at High Bluff, Manitoba, completing his education 1933. Wilkinson worked on the family farm for several years before moving to Fort William, Ontario where he worked as a labourer at Canadian Car & Foundry. After enlisting at Winnipeg, Manitoba March 30, 1942, Wilkinson married in April 1942 before going overseas in October 1942. Wilkinson served with the Royal Canadian Infantry Corps attached to 1st Battalion, The Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada (Ullamh) as a Private during the Second World War. Landing at Graye-sur-Mer, Calvados, France in early July 1944, the battalion advanced with the 6th Canadian Infantry Brigade, 2nd Canadian Infantry Division, taking part in Operation Totalize during the capture of Caen. On August 8, 1944, Private Thomas Donald Wilkinson died after coming under attack by German forces while crossing Verrieres Ridge near the village of Fontenay-le-Marmion. Wilkinson is commemorated at the Bretteville-sur-Laize Canadian War Cemetery, Calvados, France. Son of George William Frederick and Lillian Agnes (nee Beresford) Wilkinson of Brandon, Manitoba; brother of William George, Allen Frederick, Frederick Wesley, Robert Arthur, Harold, James Beresford, John Allen Stuart and Kathleen Margaret Wilkinson; husband of Christina Jean (nee Finnie) Wilkinson of Portage la Prairie, Manitoba; he was 26 years old. Wilkinson Lake, northwest of Wells Lake, Manitoba is named in his honour.
