Roy Leslie Green was born January 15, 1924, at High River, Alberta, the son of Harry Ernest and Alice Irene (nee Miller) Green, and the brother of Ernest Allan, Eva, Muriel Bernice, and Maude Green (died in 1919). Raised on the family farm near Brant, Alberta, Roy completed his education at Brant High School in early June 1942 and enlisted at Calgary, Alberta June 15, 1942. Overseas in April 1943, Roy served with the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War as a Flight Sergeant (Air Gunner) attached to No. 432 (Leaside) Squadron (Saeviter Ad Lucem). Part of Bomber Command’s No. 6 Group, the No. 432 Squadron operated Avro Lancaster aircraft from RAF Eastmoor, Yorkshire, England, on bombing raids over occupied Northwest Europe. On November 6, 1943, Roy Leslie Green died while practicing circuits and landings with No. 1679 Heavy Conversion Flight Unit at Rose Cottage Farm, near Terrington, Yorkshire, England, when his Lancaster aircraft crashed on its final take-off a few miles from the aerodrome. He was 21 years old. Roy is commemorated at the Stonefall Cemetery, Harrogate, Yorkshire, England, and on the High River Memorial, Alberta.
